Dr. Judith L. Benscoter received two degrees from Temple University: a Bachelor's degree (1971) and Master's degree (1973) in health and physical education. Add to those a D.O. degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and you have an extremely accomplished Hall of Fame inductee. As a Temple student-athlete, Benscoter played field hockey and lacrosse all four years while joining the swim team in her sophomore year. Named field hockey team captain in 1971, she was also selected to the Philadelphia sectional team from 1969 to 1972. Benscoter served as president of the Women's Athletic Association for two years and was a member of the Delta Psi sorority at Temple. While attending Temple's graduate school, Benscoter was part of two United States touring squads. In 1972, she traveled to Jamaica, and in 1973, she traveled to Argentina. In addition, Benscoter was chosen for the U.S. Reserve team in both 1970 and 1972. Continuing her involvement in athletics, Benscoter taught physical education and coached basketball and field hockey at Chestnut Hill College from 1972 to 1974. She also played on the Temple Owlettes hockey team (1973-1980). Her master's thesis was entitled "Strength Training in Women Basketball Players" (1973). As a prominent orthopedic surgeon, Benscoter has authored numerous papers and publications including "Women's Field Hockey: In Condition" in 1974. While completing her internship at Suburban General Hospital, Benscoter spoke on "Women in Athletics" at a sports medicine symposium. A member of the Special Olympics Advisory Committee, Benscoter volunteered her medical expertise to the organization which gave her the Volunteer Recognition Award in 1983. In 1984, Benscoter received the Prism Award (in cooperation with Metropolitan Hospital) for volunteer services.
