Sam Fogel

An outstanding all-around athlete, Sam Fogel competed four years in both gymnastics and soccer at Temple. He was The Eastern Intercollegiate Gymnastics League All-Around Champion in 1941 when he finished second in the Nationals on the long horse, parallel bars and rings. He took sixth place in the All-Around competition at the Nationals. In 1939 and 1940, he was the EIGL champion in both the parallel bars and rings events. He was named to the second All-American soccer team in 1940. A versatile athlete at Overbrook High School, he was awarded 10 varsity letters while competing in gymnastics, soccer, baseball and swimming. He served 25 years as a coach in the Philadelphia School System and produced 15 championship teams, including 10 in gymnastics. He retired from the Board of Education in 1980. He had been a gymnastics official for 25 years, is the author of a high school book for gymnastics and has also has been active in dramatics both as an amateur and professional.
