Undefeated freestyle champion in distances from 220 yards to four miles as an undergraduate in 1934-36, Susan Robertson Haywood turned professional and won the World Long Distance Swim Championships in 1936. She won the United States for 700 yards in 1931 and was the Amateur Athletic Union National Long Distance Swim Champion from 1932-35. She broke a 19-year record in National Long Distance Swim Championship in 1933 by swimming the four mile course in 54 minutes, 45.4 seconds. She set the New Jersey Amateur Athletic Union record in the 100 meter freestyle in 1935 and the New Jersey Amateur Athletic union record in the 220-yard freestyle in 1936. She won 48 medals in swimming before the age of 17. At the time, she held New York Metropolitan titles in the 220-, 440-, 500-, and 800-yard freestyle events.
