Vera Salem Egner was lettered in basketball and field hockey from 1924-26. The 1925 Temple Women's basketball team finished 12-0 and in 1926 the hockey team closed at 6-2. She coached basketball and hockey at Swedesboro (NJ) High School from 1926-36 and coached Temple's basketball team to 10-0 record in 1945. She taught and coached at Marple-Newtown High School from 1956-75. She was named Women's Athletic Director at Marple-Newtown in 1966, the first Philadelphia area woman to hold this position. She served in Philadelphia Board of Women Officials for 35 years in all capacities. The "Coach of the Year" award established at Marple-Newtown in 1976 is honored in her name. She was inducted into Marple-Newtown Coaches' Hall of Fame in 1979, the first woman to be honored.
