TEMPLE MEN'S GYMNASTICS OPENS SEASON BY CAPTURING UMASS OPEN TITLE

The Temple University men's gymnastics team used a meet-high 33.200 on the horizontal bar to capture the UMass Open team title on Saturday, December 8 with a 200.650 score. The host Minutemen, the defending ECAC champion, placed second with a team score of 200.550. Army (197.450), Springfield (190.200), Southern Connecticut (183.100), Vermont (157.100) and M.I.T. (143.100) rounded out the scoring in the seven-team meet that opened the Owls' 2001-02 season.

Junior Richie Maguire (New Rochelle, N.Y./Pocono Mountain HS) placed second overall in the competition with an all-around score of 50.350. Maguire posted a meet-best 9.200 on still rings while registering an 8.500 on floor exercise, 7.400 on pommel horse, 8.550 on vault, 8.300 on parallel bars and 8.400 on horizontal bar. UMass junior Darren Morace won individual honors with an all-around score of 51.200.

Other Temple all-around competitors included junior Alex Weber (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown HS), who finished 5th overall with a 49.900 score. Junior Travis Pummer (Allentown, Pa./William Allen HS) competed in three events, posting an 8.100 on pommel horse, 8.000 on still rings and 7.700 on parallel bars.

The Temple men's gymnastics team, under the direction of 26th-year head coach Fred Turoff, returns to action at the West Point Open, January 11-12, in West Point, N.Y.
