FRED TUROFF RECEIVES GENE WETTSTONE OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE AWARD AT PENN STATE

2.17.02 | Men's Gymnastics

The highlight of the Temple men's gymnastics team's dual meet at Penn State (Saturday, February 16) came after the competition, when head coach Fred Turoff was presented the Gene Wettstone Outstanding Performance Award. The honor, which is typically presented to the top competitor at Penn State home meets, was bestowed upon Turoff for his dedication and support of collegiate men's gymnastics.

Turoff has been an ambassador of the sport, which has fallen victim to cutbacks at collegiate institutions across the country in recent years. A native Philadelphian, Turoff is in his 26th year directing the Temple men's gymnastics program.

In the meet, Temple finished behind Penn State (213.550) with a 207.750 score. The Owls top event was still rings, where the team posted a 35.250 team score.

Individually, Richard Maguire was Temple's top competitor, placing second all-around with a 52.500 score and winning the vault with a 9.300 effort.

The Owls return to action this Saturday, February 23, at McGonigle Hall in a 1:00 p.m. tri-meet featuring Springfield and UMass.
