TEMPLE TO HOST ECAC MEN'S GYMNASTICS CHAMPIONSHIPS THIS WEEKEND

The Temple University Department of Athletics will host the 2002 Eastern College Athletic Conference Men's Gymnastics Championships this weekend, Saturday-Sunday, March 23-24 at McGonigle Hall. Competition begins at 3:00 p.m. on both days.

Eleven teams, eight that are ranked in the top 20 nationally, will compete for the team title. Saturday will consist of the team and all-around competitions. Sunday is event finals.

Clara Lomady will be presenting the team championship trophy on Saturday. The Abington, Pa. resident holds the record for national championships won by a United States gymnast, winning 39 titles in her career during the 1940's and 50's. Lomady will be joined by Steve McCain, a member of the 2000 U.S. Olympic Team and four World Championship squads. On Sunday, former Temple gymnasts, all NCAA or EIGL champions, will present awards.

The University of Massachusetts has won the team championship three years in a row. The Minutemen unseated Temple in 1999. The Owls had won the title nine years in a row from 1990-98.

An open practice session will take place Friday at McGonigle Hall from 4-7 p.m. Coaches and competitors will be made available to the media at this time.

Tickets for the Championships are $5.00 a day and can be purchased at the door on the days of the event
