Temple University gymnasts Travis Kitchen, Theo Maes and Nyika White have advanced to the preliminary round of the NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championships, Friday, April 5, 2002, from 7-9:30 p.m. in Norman, Oklahoma. The trio advance based upon their event performances in the qualifying competition on Thursday. Individual event finals are scheduled to take place Saturday, April 6, from 7-8:30 p.m.

Kitchen, a sophomore from St. Louis, Mo. (Berkeley H.S.), advanced to event preliminaries with a 8.600 score on parallel bars. Maes, a junior from Evanston, Ill. (Evanston Township H.S.) moved forward to Friday with a 9.200 effort on vault. White, a freshman from Williamstown, N.C. (Williamstown H.S.) qualified for preliminaries with a 8.850 score on rings.

In team competition, the Owls placed sixth in Thursday's afternoon session, failing to advance as a team to the championships. Temple was hindered by injuries, as Eastern College Athletic Conference all-around champion Richie Maguire was held out of both the pommel horse and parallel bars with a sprained wrist. Fellow junior Alex Weber was also bitten by the injury bug but performed in all events despite a sprained thumb. Maguire and Weber both advanced to the championship round in 2001.
