PHILADELPHIA -- With two first-place finishes from senior Theo Maes and junior David Ramos, the Temple men's gymnastics team defeated both Army and Southern Connecticut in its season opener at McGonigle Hall on Monday afternoon. The Owls narrowly edged past second-place Army 207.550 -207.325. Southern Connecticut trailed throughout the entire meet, finishing with a score of 183.450.

Returning to the Owls' lineup after a broken ankle sidelined him for the entire 2003 season, Maes won the vault (9.450) competition and tied Army's Joe Baumann for first-place on parallel bars (8.550). Maes also finished second on floor exercise with a score of 9.250.

Ramos, a current member of the Puerto Rican National Team, finished first on both floor exercise (9.300) and high bar (9.450). He also placed third on the pommel horse with a score of 8.450.

Senior captain Toros Torcomian shared first-place honors with Army's Brian Lees on rings (9.700). Fellow senior Zach-Hanson Hart contributed to the Owl effort by placing third on both floor exercise (8.900) and on vault (9.100). Senior Kevin Hallinan added a second-place finish on pommel horse (8.650) and a third place finish in the all-around competition.

Army's sole first-place finish came from Nate Hitchcock on pommel horse (8.700), while Southern Connecticut's Curtis Haines provided the team's only first-place finish in the all-around (51.400).
