MAES LEADS OWLS' INDIVIDUAL SCORING AT WEST POINT OPEN

WEST POINT, N.Y. -- Senior Theo Maes led the Temple men's gymnastics team by placing first and second on vault and floor exercise, respectively, in the final round of individual competition at the 13th annual West Point Open on Saturday, January 31. The Owls, one of eight nationally-ranked teams at the Open, placed fourth in team competition on Friday, January 30. Temple advanced five gymnasts from the first round to the final round of competition held at Christl Arena inside the Holleder Center.

On vault Maes tied Nebraska's Josh Rasile for first place with a score of 9.200. Maes also placed second on floor exercise with a 9.200 score.

Junior David Ramos competed in a team-high three events. Ramos finished third on high bar (9.300) fifth on parallel bars (8.400) and . Ramos also tied Penn State's Chad Buczek for sixth place on floor exercise.

Senior captain Toros Torcomian placed sixth on rings with a score of 8.950. Senior Zach Hanson-Hart finished seventh on vault (9.00) and classmate Kevin Hallinan placed eighth on pommel horse (8.100).

The West Point Open featured over 800 gymnasts on nine collegiate and 75 club teams. Eight of the ten collegiate teams entered the meet ranked in the top 18 nationally. Prior to the meet, the Temple men's gymnastics team owned an eighth place rank.

The Temple men's gymnastics team travels to Las Vegas next weekend to compete in the annual Winter Cup Challenge on February 6 and 7.
