MEN'S GYMNASTICS TEAM RETURNS TO MCGONIGLE FOR TRI-MEET
2.20.04 | Men's Gymnastics
PHILADELPHIA -- The steady performances of the NCAA's third-best vaulter Theo Maes and nationally-ranked ringsmen Toros Torcomian and Nyika White will lead the Temple men's gymnastics team when it hosts MIT and Springfield on February 21. The 9-5 Owls return to McGonigle Hall for their first home meet since January 19.
Maes, sidelined for the entire 2003 season due to a broken ankle, has not missed a step this season, as he has captured first place on vault in every meet, but one. Most recently, Maes had a first place finish in a dual meet with No. 5 Penn State at Rec. Hall. On vault Maes owns a 9.650 career best score. Maes also consistently adds points to the Cherry and White effort on floor, parallel bars and horizontal bar.
All-American White returned to the Owls' team lineup against Penn State after suffering an elbow injury in pre-season workouts. In his inaugural team meet of the season, White placed third behind the nation's best ringsman Kevin Tan and No. 7 Chad Buczek. White's performance catapulted him into the No. 9 position in the NCAA's national still rings rankings.
Senior captain Torcomian, the country's No. 8 ringsman, scored a season-high 9.700 on the apparatus in a tri-meet with Army and Southern Connecticut. Torcomian also scores on vault.
Junior stand-out David Ramos leads Temple on floor exercise with three first-place finishes this season. Ramos also significantly contributes to the Owl scoring on horizontal bar and parallel bars.
Springfield, ranked 19th, comes into the meet with a .500 record. This season Temple outscored the Pride 206.150-198.700 at the West Point Open on January 30. In head-to-head action Springfield and Temple last competed on February 23, 2003, when the Owls topped the Pride 206.400-202.950.
MIT enters the meet winless this season. The Owls last met MIT in the West Point Open, where they crushed Tech 206.150 -- 142.900. In 2003 MIT and Temple met once in the ECAC Championship meet, where Tech finished last.
With the ECAC Championships looming on the horizon, the defending champions Owls try to pick up two home wins before traveling to Illinois and Navy for their final regular season meets.
