TEMPLE TOPS MIT AND SPRINGFIELD IN MEN'S GYMNASTICS TRI-MEET

PHILADELPHIA -- From the first routine to the last, the Temple men's gymnastics team never trailed as it defeated Springfield and MIT in front of nearly 300 spectators at McGonigle Hall on February 21. The tri-meet champion Owls captured first and second on every event, finishing with a 205.450 team score. Springfield took second with a 199.950 score, while MIT placed last with a 144.300 score.
With three powerful routines, senior Theodore Maes led the Owls by winning the vault (9.450) and floor exercise (8.850) and finishing second on parallel bars (8.500). On vault fellow senior Zach Hanson-Hart scored a personal best and tied Maes for first (9.450. Hanson-Hart also placed second on floor exercise (8.500).
Senior Kevin Hallinan nailed two solid routines to win the pommel horse (9.00) and parallel bars (8.600). Hallinan's pommel horse score marked a personal best score.
On rings senior Toros Torcomian and junior Nyika White tied for first with a 9.525 score. Each performed a steady, controlled routine and stuck the final landing for the event victory.
Senior John Behrle, the first to complete a pommel horse routine without a fall, placed second on the apparatus with a 9.600, a personal best score.
Springfield's best finish came from senior Jay Delise on horizontal bar. Delise finished second in the event with a 8.150 score. The Pride also collected four third place finishes on floor exercise, pommel horse, rings, and vault.
MIT freshman Brad Sutton, the only Tech member to score in the top 10 of any event, took a third and a sixth place finish on pommel horse (8.6500) and parallel bars (8.150), respectively.
Prior to the start of the meet, the Temple gymnastics team honored its nine seniors in a short ceremony. The tri-meet marked the seniors' final home competition of their collegiate careers. The senior Owls honored were as follows: John Behrle, Adam Courtney, Kevin Hallinan, Zach Hanson-Hart, Travis Kitchen, Theodore Maes, David Nowalowski, Stephan Smith, and Toros Torcomian.
The Owls travel to Chicago next weekend to compete against Illinois on Friday, February 27 and Illinois-Chicago on Sunday, February 29.
