MAES AND WHITE PLACE FIRST TO ADVANCE TO NCAA NATIONAL INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS

CHAMPAIGN, IL -- Temple gymnasts Theodore Maes and Nyika White will advance to the NCAA Men's Gymnastics National Individual Championship Finals on Sunday, April 4. In the individual event qualifying round today, the pair placed first in a field of 47 nationally-ranked gymnasts on vault and still rings, respectively. Tomorrow, Maes and White will compete for a national title and All-American honors in the individual event finals at the University of Illinois.
As the Owls leading vaulter, Maes scored a 9.700 on the apparatus in the individual event qualifying round. With a 9.675 on still rings, teammate and current All-American Nyika White advances to the individual event finals for the second year straight.
Temple's David Ramos competed on floor exercise and horizontal bar in the individual event qualifying round. Ramos's 8.750 score on floor and 8.950 score on horizontal bar were not enough to propel him into the individual event finals.
Zach Hanson-Hart also performed a floor exercise routine. Scoring only a 7.70 Hanson-Hart's quest for an individual NCAA title ended. Hanson-Hart delivered a strong performance despite hospitalization due to a virus yesterday.
Although eight Temple men's gymnasts qualified for the NCAA Championship meet, only Hanson-Hart, Maes, Ramos and White advanced past the national qualifying round on Friday, April 2 to the individual event qualifying round today. From the individual event qualifying round today, only Maes and White have emerged as national contenders for an individual title at the NCAA National Championship meet. The top six finishers on each apparatus automatically earn All-American status in tomorrow's individual event finals.
