1.21.05 | Men's Gymnastics

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA - Temple men's gymnastics opened its 2005 season Friday evening and placed second with a 207.325 score behind No.4-ranked Penn State (216.875), which captured all six events and had the individual winner on each apparatus. Navy (203.500) finished third in the tri-meet held at Recreation Hall.

Senior David Ramos was the Owls' top performer in three events, earning second on parallel bars (8.800), third on high bar (9.100) and fourth in the floor exercise (9.250). Fellow upperclassman Nkiya White, a two-time All-American on still rings, also paced the Cherry & White on multiple apparatuses, claiming second on rings (9.225) and fourth on vault (9.300).

Freshman Luke Vexler, who will be a member of the United States squad at the Maccabiah Games in Israel in July, made an impact in his first collegiate event, leading the Owls on pommel horse with a 8.850 score to place third. The younger brother of former Temple gymnastics standout Aaron Vexler (1994-98), Luke was the team's only all-around competitor, totaling a 50.450. Newcomers Andy Corp (PH, PB, HB) and Sterling Kramer (PH, PB) also saw their first collegiate action.

Penn State's Luis Vargas won pommel horse (9.100), rings (9.600) and parallel bars (9.500) en route to capturing the all-around crown with a 55.350 total.

Twelve student-athletes worked in Cherry & White, as the Owls finished second in every event behind the hosts.

Temple was scheduled to host James Madison and William & Mary in a tri-meet this Sunday at McGonigle Hall before the event was postponed due to the threat of inclement weather. As such, the team will return to action at the West Point Open, January 28-29.
