TEMPLE GYMNAST NYIKA WHITE FINISHES THIRD ON RINGS AT WINTER CUP CHALLENGE

LAS VEGAS, NV  -- Temple senior Nyika White turned in a 9.275 on still rings Saturday night to finish third on the apparatus in the event finals of the 2005 Winter Cup Challenge at the Las Vegas Sports Arena. A two-time All-American on rings, White was the top collegiate performer in the event, placing behind Eric Lamorte (9.525) and Penn State alum Kevin Tan (9.400).

 

White advanced to Saturday evening's finals after producing one of the top eight scores (8.733, 8th) in the event during Friday's preliminary round. Sixty-two individuals competed on rings in the preliminary round, which consisted of two sessions.

 

Sophomore Sean Bryan also represented the Owls at the prestigious event and finished 38th all-around with a 43.698 total on Friday.

 

Eight gymnasts were named to the 2005 U.S. National Team based on their performances at the Challenge and became eligible to represent the United States in international competitions leading up to the Visa Championships, Aug. 11-13 in Indianapolis.

 

Alexander Artemev, who declined an invitation to compete for his native Belarus in order to vie for a spot on the U.S. team, had a 9.500 on the pommel horse to earn a spot on the U.S. national team.

 

Event champions Jonathan Horton, LaMorte and David Sender also earned spots along with Guillermo Alvarez, Todd Thornton and Sean Townsend. David Durante claimed the Challenge's all-around title Friday. In floor exercise, Horton and Adam Pummer tied for first with scores of 8.950. Sender won the vault with a 9.600. Jason Gatson won the parallel bars at 9.400 and Spring took the high bar at 9.250.
