3.26.06 | Men's Gymnastics

ANNAPOLIS, MD -- Temple sophomore Luke Vexler won the floor exercise title with a 9.325 score and freshman John Vogtman was cited as the Conference's Co-Rookie of the Year Sunday afternoon during event finals of the 2006 ECAC Men's Gymnastics at Macdonough Hall. Vogtman placed second on parallel bars (8.600) and third on pommel horse (8.600) to become the second Owl in as many years to capture the league's top newcomer honor, following Vexler last season.

Temple finished third with a 203.180 score, while sophomore Sterling Kramer captured the all-around title with a 51.30 total, during the team and all-around portion of the Championships on Saturday. Despite the third place finish, the Owls' score elevates them into the NCAA Championships. Temple entered ECAC's ranked 13th nationally with a 202.867 average. Illinois-Chicago entered the Championships ranked 12th with a 202.925 average, but placed fifth with a 199.300 score. As such, the Owls will surpass the Flames in the final regular season rankings and earn the 12th and final berth to NCAAs.

In Sunday's event finals, Kramer finished ninth on pommel horse (7.700), sixth on vault (8.850) and ninth on parallel bars (8.00). Junior Clay Stewart placed third in the floor exercise (9.250), junior Dan Berlin earned fourth on pommel horse (8.550), senior Brian Forquer finished sixth on still rings (8.700) and sophomore Alex Gorski placed eighth on vault (8.550).

Vexler entered the Championships ranked tied for 11th nationally on floor exercise with a 9.183 scoring average. Kramer was the nation's 20th-ranked all-arounder with a 47.383 scoring average.

Vogtman shares his honor with Navy freshman Joseph Atzeback.

Temple, under the direction of 30th-year head coach Fred Turoff, next competes at the NCAA Championships in Norman, Oklahoma. The team and all-around competition takes place on April 7, followed by the individual event finals on April 8.
