PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple men's gymnastics team had four student-athletes named to the 2006 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Winter At-Large Team on Sunday, April 9. Senior Brian Forquer, junior Dan Berlin and sophomores Andrew Corp and Sterling Kramer occupied 40 percent of the 10-member men's squad, which was comprised of fencing, wrestling, squash and gymnastics student-athletes from the 28 Philadelphia metropolitan area institutions that sponsor those respective sports.
Forquer served as team co-captain this past season for a Temple squad that advanced to the NCAA qualifier after being ranked 12th nationally at the conclusion of the regular season. An ECAC medalist on rings, the Columbus, Ohio, native has a 3.29 cumulative grade point average as a history major. Berlin, a kinesiology major from Dix Hills, N.Y., was an ECAC medalist on pommel horse and has a 3.25 g.p.a. Corp, from Baldwinsville, N.Y., was a steady competitor on vault, pommel horse, parallel bars and horizontal bar, while boasting a 3.30 majoring in physics. Kramer, who calls Garwood, N.J. home, won the 2006 ECAC all-around title and advanced at NCAA Championships on horizontal bar with a 3.43 g.p.a. in biochemistry.
In order to be nominated for the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area teams, which sponsored basketball, swimming and at-large squads for the winter season for both men and women based on participation rates among area schools, a student-athlete most have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, be of at least sophomore standing and be a starter or important reserve. Voting is conducted by the Philadelphia Area Sports Information Directors Association.
