OWLS SEASON COMES TO A CLOSE IN QUALIFYING ROUND OF NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

4.7.06 | Men's Gymnastics

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple men's gymnastics team placed sixth with a 196.925 score in session II of the qualifying round of the NCAA Championships Thursday evening in Norman, Oklahoma. The host Sooners (217.225), Illinois (214.775) and California (213.900) advanced from the Owls' grouping and will be joined by Stanford (215.900), Penn State (213.450) and Iowa (212.42) in Friday evening's team finals.

The Owls had many fine performances Thursday night, but did not have any individuals advance. Three teams and the top three all-around competitors not on one of the qualifying teams, plus the top three individuals on each event not already qualified on a team or as an all-around competitor, advanced from each qualifying session to the finals.

Sophomores Sterling Kramer and Luke Vexler fell just short of qualifying as all-arounders, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively. Kramer posted a 49.350 total and Vexler accumulated a 48.850 score. Michigan's Gerry Signorelli earned the third and final at-large all-around spot of the session with a 50.050. Kramer also came extremely close to advancing to event finals on the horizontal bar. The final position in the event was earned by Army's Tim Burns with an 8.950 score, while Kramer posted an 8.900.

Junior Clay Stewart was Temple's top performer in the floor exercise (8.850) Thursday evening, while Dan Berlin led on pommel horse (8.150), John Vogtman paced the team on both rings (8.050) and parallel bars (8.350) and Derek Shepard led on vault (8.950).

Four Owls concluded the regular season ranked among the nation's top 20, as the Owls finished third at the ECAC Championships on March 25. Vexler, the 2006 ECAC floor exercise champion, is the country's 12th rated (9.230) performer in the floor exercise and 14th-rated all-around (49.870) competitor. Kramer, the 2006 ECAC all-around champion, is ranked 18th all-around (48.950). Vogtman, the 2006 ECAC Co-Rookie of the Year is ranked 18th (8.490) on pommel horse and Stewart is the nation's 14th rated (9.150) student-athlete in the floor exercise.

Temple, under the direction of 30th-year head coach Fred Turoff, competed in its 80th season of collegiate men's gymnastics in 2006.
