Owls Finish Sixth In NCAA Evening Qualifying Session, Stewart and Vogtman Advance

STATE COLLEGE, PA - The Temple men's gymnastics team, two weeks removed from its ECAC-EIGL conference championship victory, placed sixth (205.400) in the NCAA's qualifying round held Thursday night at Penn State. Senior Clay Stewart (floor exercise) and sophomore John Vogtman (pommel horse) have advanced to the second day of competition on Friday.

As the top three advance to Friday's team finals, Penn State (218.900) posted the qualifying round's highest team score while Oklahoma (218.600) finished second and Minnesota (216.900) placed third. California (216.550) finished fourth while Nebraska (209.100) finished fifth.

In the afternoon session, Stanford (216.350) claimed the top spot while Illinois (216.300) finished second and Michigan (215.350) placed third.

The Owls posted their outing's highest team score in the floor exercise (35.900) behind Stewart's qualifying tally of 9.500. Sophomore Nick Iles added an even 9.000, junior Sterling Kramer posted an 8.750 and sophomore John Vogtman tallied an 8.650.

The Cherry and White posted a 33.000 team score on the pommel horse while sophomore Vogtman recorded a team-best and qualifying tally of 8.500. Junior Dan Berlin tallied an 8.250, junior Andrew Corp scored an 8.150 and Iles posted an 8.100.

Vogtman led the Temple charges on the rings (35.150) with a team-high 9.100 while Kramer added an 8.800. Freshman standout Patrick McLaughlin tallied an 8.700 and junior Sterling Kramer posted an 8.550.

Temple's 34.350 vault team score was again spear-headed by the team-high total from Vogtman (8.750). Vexler (8.700), senior Derek Shepard (8.600) and McLaughlin (8.300) rounded-out 31st-year head coach Fred Turoff's vault attack.

McLaughlin led all Owls on the parallel bars (33.850) with an 8.600 while Vexler scored an 8.550. Senior Nadov Simenauer and Corp turned in identical tallies of 8.350.

The Cherry and White high bar team score of 33.150 was led by Vexler's team-high 8.550 while Kramer followed suit with an 8.500. Iles and Corp each posted scores of 8.050.

Friday's competition, held at Penn State, begins at 7:00 p.m.
