Stewart and Vogtman Compete at NCAA Championships

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA - Senior Clay Stewart placed tied for 25th on the floor exercise with a 9.300 score and sophomore John Vogtman finished tied for 42nd on the pommel horse with a 7.450 effort during Friday evening's team and all-around portion of the 2007 NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championships at Recreation Hall. The two were the only Owls to advance to Friday night's competition based upon their performances in Thursday's qualifying round.
The results bring both Stewart's and Vogtman's seasons to a close, as the top eight finishers and one alternate from each event in Friday evening's competition advance to Saturday's event finals. Temple's team campaign ended at Thursday's qualifier, when the Cherry & White finished 11th overall, and sixth in its session, with a 205.400 score. The top six teams, three from of each of the two qualifying sessions, advanced to Friday evening's team and all-around finals.
Before a home crowd, Penn State captured its 12th men's gymnastics national title Friday night. The Nittany Lions posted a 221.000 score to distance second place Oklahoma (220.200) and third place Stanford (218.450). Sooner Taqiy Abdullah-Simmons captured the all-around title with a 55.750 performance.
The Owls had yet another strong season under 31st-year head coach Fred Turoff in 2007, winning their 15th ECAC-EIGL team title to earn an automatic NCAA berth. Temple captured the conference championship, its first since 2003, before a home crowd at McGonigle Hall on March 31st and crowned three (Luke Vexler, all-around; Stewart, floor exercise; Vogtman, vault) ECAC-EIGL individual champions.
