PHILADELPHIA - Temple University sophomore gymnast John Vogtman has been named the 2006-07 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Men's At-Large Performer of the Year. Vogtman is one of six Temple student-athletes selected to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area At-Large Teams, three on the men's team and three on the women's team. The teams are voted on by the sports information offices of the 28 area institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area.
Vogtman was joined on the 10-man Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area team by teammates Andrew Corp, a junior physics major, and Jason Russo, a sophomore engineering major. Three Owl fencers - junior Brianna Ferrara, sophomore Nina Gernes and sophomore Kaitlyn Uckert - represented Temple on the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Women's At-Large squad.
Vogtman helped lead Temple to the 2007 ECAC-EIGL Championships and a berth in the NCAA Championships. He won the vault competition at the ECAC-EIGL Championships held at Temple's McGonigle Hall and also placed third in the all-around competition. At the NCAAs this past weekend, he was one of two Owls to advance to the second day of individual competition, placing on the pommel horse.
Named the 2006 ECAC Co-Rookie of the Year as a freshman, the Baltimore, MD native (Parkville HS) is on the Dean's List and owns a 3.71 cumulative grade point average. He has not yet declared a major field of study at Temple.
