SAN JOSE, CA - Temple junior John Vogtman got the call he'd been waiting for earlier in the day Friday when he was told he'd be replacing an injured athlete in the 2007 Visa Championships, held in San Jose, California. He then went out and performed with the nation's best that same night.
"I was a little surprsed that someone would pull out of a meet of such high importance," said Vogtman. "It's such a great experience to compete with guys that I've looked up to over the last several years. This meet has given me a lot more confidence as I prepare for big NCAA meets."
The final rankings from this competition combined the results from preliminaries with Friday evening's finals. Vogtman's combined all-around ranking was 22nd out of 36 athletes. In addition to his all-around ranking, he was 26th on floor exercise, 22nd on pommel horse, eighteenth on the still rings, 29th on vault, 27th on parallel bars, and 31st on high bar.
This competition also allowed Vogtman to get a feel for the new open-ended scoring system which has been slightly modified for the upcoming NCAA season. Check back to owlsports.com as the season draws near for a full explanation of this new scoring system.
