Volleyball Falls 3-1 to Top Seed Dayton in A-10 Semifinals

Owls conclude season with 14-12 record; Zhang tallies 30 kills in final match

DAYTON, Ohio – After a dominating 25-16 win in the first set, the Temple volleyball team only narrowly lost the second before Dayton went on to overpower the Owls in the third and fourth sets to end Temple's season in the Atlantic 10 Tournament semifinals.
Temple concludes the 2009 season with a record of 14-12, while Dayton moves on to the championship match with a record of 27-3. The Flyers took a 25-23 win in set two, a 25-14 win in set three and closed out the match with a 25-16 win.
Senior Yun Yi Zhang led all players with 30 kills in the final match of her career, while senior Jackie Morrison recorded a double-double of 37 assist and 12 digs in her final match. Ariel Pierre was strong on defense for the Owls with a match-high 23 digs.
Leading the charge for Dayton were Lindsay Fletemier and Becky Novacek with 17 kills apiece.
Temple got down early in the first set, 5-2, but after tying the score at 12-12 for the third time, the Owls went on to dominate the rest of the way. Zhang put together a string of four kills in the final stretch, lifting Temple to a 25-16 win.
The second set was neck-and-neck the whole way, but it was Dayton who made a late push with Fletemier giving the Flyers set point with a kill, and after Temple fought one off on a kill by Zhang, Fletemier struck again to even the match at 1-1.
With 20 kills to Temple's eight in the third set, Dayton led from the beginning and increased its lead throughout.
The story was the same in the fourth set as Temple never regained its momentum from the first two sets and the Flyers powered through to advance to the championship match.
