Noone and Sagna contribute to 2-1 victory
Ambler, PA – Poised to finish the season victorious, the Temple men's soccer team (9-7-2, 4-4-1 in A-10) upset 15th-ranked Charlotte (11-3-4, 5-2-2 in A-10) on Senior Day, Sunday afternoon at Ambler Sports Complex. Senior's J.T. Noone and Francois Sagna each had a goal in the 2-1 winning effort.
After a pre-game ceremony which honored the Cherry and White's seven seniors, the game got underway and TU came ready to play. From the start, the Owl's matched Charlotte's intensity. However, it was 49er forward Evan James who ripped a shot from the corner of the eighteen that slipped just under the crossbar, giving Charlotte a 1-0 lead at 8:10 into the first half. 49er midfielder Isaac Caughran who played the ball to James was awarded the assist.
Just when it appeared that Charlotte had taken the momentum, Sagna launched a shot that was blocked but held his composure and retrieved the ball, one-timing a beautiful shot into the lower right hand corner passed 49er goalie David Martin at 8:58.
The Owls' seniors were not finished scoring. Just before half, junior midfielder Max Kinderwater was taken down in the box and TU was awarded a penalty kick, which was successfully converted by the Cherry and White's all-time assist leader J.T. Noone at 40:34. Noone's goal gave the Owls a 2-1 lead heading into the second half.
Noone's goal proved to be the deciding tally as a foul plagued second half came to an end. Seven yellow cards were awarded in the contest. This marks the highest-ranked team the Owls have defeated under head coach Dave MacWilliams. The last time TU upset a ranked team came in a 4-2 win over then 22nd-ranked Dayton on October 31, 2008.
“I thought we played great, I thought the guys came with passion,” commented MacWilliams. “It's a credit to the guys they battled for their last game.”
Senior goalkeeper Bryant Hosler got the start and finished with 3 saves. Temple out-shot Charlotte 18-16 in the game.
“I thought we battled well, it was a physical game,” said Owls' keeper Hosler. “We talked about it before the game, about the guys sending us seniors out on a good note, and it feels good to win this last one.”
Hosler, along with fellow seniors Chas Chupein, Augustin Coly, Martin Dell'Arciprete, J.T. Noone, Mike Puppolo, and Francois Sagna wore the Cherry and White for the final time in today's contest.
