RICHMOND, Va. (8/29/09) - Behind a dominating performance from senior Yun Yi Zhang, the Temple volleyball team picked up its first win of the season with a 3-0 sweep of St. John's at the VCU/Third Degree Sportswear Invitational.
Zhang averaged nearly nine kills per set in leading the Owls to a win by scores of 25-18, 25-23 and 26-24. Her match-high total of 26 kills with just three errors on 47 attempts gave her an impressive hitting percentage of .489, and she added 14 kills for a double-double.
Senior Jackie Morrison dished out 44 assists and junior Ariel Pierre recorded a match-high 22 digs.
Temple led 16-11 in the opening set but the Red Storm rallied to come within one at 19-18 before the Owls rattled off six straight points to end the set.
Down 22-21 in the second set, Zhang recorded three straight kills to help the Owls come out on top. In an exciting third set, each team failed to convert on a set-point opportunity before sophomore Elizabeth Prang's kill gave Temple a 25-24 lead and Zhang once again came up with the set and match-winning kill.
The Owls will be back in action next weekend in the Big 5 Tournament hosted by UPenn.Box Score
