Owls return 15 letterwinners and five seniors to this year's team
PHILADELPHIA – Action begins for the Temple men's gymnastics team this weekend, when they travel to compete in the West Point Open on January 15-16. The Owls return 15 letterwinners to their 2010 squad, headlined by two graduating seniors and three returning next year for a fifth year of study.
“The West Point Open is always a good test for us,” said 34th-year head coach Fred Turoff. “It shows us how ready we are for the coming season, and allows us to compare ourselves to many of our regular opponents. I have high hopes for several of our guys individually, and expect our team to be in the top three at this meet.”
Turoff, an inductee into the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame as a coach this past summer, is expecting graduating seniors Patrick McLaughlin and Tyler Croteau to continue to lead the Owls. McLaughling placed third in the all-around last season at the ECAC's, competing with no training the prior week due to an abdominal strain. Croteau will resume his steady work on floor exercise, pommel horse, and parallel bars, with a shot at vault as well.
Three who are returning next year as well, Chris Bizub, Scott Bloomfield and Jesse Kitzen-Abelson, should lead the way to a winning year. Bloomfield was an ECAC Vault Champion two years back, and is looking to return to the same spot on the podium this season.
Several newcomers to the 2010 team will also have an impact, including two finalists from last year's Junior Olympic Championships in Allan Malone and Alex Tighe. Assaf Zoor, an Israeli-born addition, is strong on several events and will bolster the ring lineup. Other incoming freshman include Zach Aguiar, John Gaffney, and Dash Sears, all of whom will be trained toward next year's competition.
Twice this season the Cherry and White will compete in the friendly confines of McGonigle Hall. The first, January 31 at 1:00 p.m., is the Owls' annual Homecoming event against defending ECAC Champion Illinois-Chicago along with club-team SUNY Brockport.
Temple will honor its seniors in the final home meet on February 13 at 7:30 p.m. versus Springfield.
