Owls Softball Drops Two on Second Day of Panther Invitational

Eastern Illinois 12, Temple 2 (5)
East Tennessee State 12, Temple 2 (5)

ATLANTA, Ga. - The Temple women's softball team was back in action at the Panther Invitational, hosted by Georgia State, on Sunday, February 21, 2010. The Owls faced Eastern Illinois in the final round of the round robin tournament, dropping a 12-2 five inning decision to the Panthers. Temple then took on East Tennessee State in the consolation game, falling 12-2.

EIU jumped on TU early, going up 5-0 after just two innings. After a Kristen Marris single, Ali Robinson also singled and both players advanced on the throw to put runners on first and second. Danielle Fagan then got the Cherry & White on the scoreboard with a two-run triple to cut the score to 5-2.

That was as much offense as Temple would muster, though, and Eastern Illinois put the game out of reach with a seven run fourth inning to take the 12-2 five inning game.

Crystal Nyman took the loss for TU, pitching 3.1 innings, giving up seven hits and nine runs.

The Owls then faced East Tennessee State for the second time in two days, playing for third place.

Despite Temple's 6-4 victory over the Buccaneers 24 hours prior, ETU turned the tables and handed the squad another 12-2 five inning setback.

The Owls found themselves in a deep hole early, falling behind 3-0 in the second. The onslaught continued at East Tennessee scored four in the third, one in the fourth and another four in the fifth.

Down to their final at-bat to avoid the 10-run rule, the Cherry & White made things interesting. Christina Sykora hit a one out single before Ali Robinson made things interesting with a two-run blast two left field to give the Owls hope.

Buccaneers pitcher Darci Gilbert walked  Christine Schlichter to put a potential run on the basepath, but Gilbert got out of the inning further unscathed, forcing Kayla Cook to ground into a double play to end the game.

Temple is 1-3 overall after the season-opening tournament and will be back in action on March 5 when it travels to Florida for the 2010 Under Armour Invitational.
