PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Temple lacrosse team kept it close in the first half, but a big second half for Rutgers lifted the Scarlet Knights to a 13-3 win in the season opener for both teams.

The Owls had plenty of opportunities, recording 23 shots to Rutgers' 28, but most came up short as the Scarlet Knights goalkeeper, Lily Kalata, made 12 saves.

Rutgers jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first 15 minutes of the contest before Temple got on the board.

Stephany Parcell, Chelsea Rosiek and Kellee Pace rattled off three straight goals for the Owls to put them within two, but they would not score again.

Marlena Welsh led the Scarlet Knights with three goals, while Brooke Cantwell tallied two goals along with two assists.

Seniors Jessica Colucci played the full game in goal for Temple and made six saves.

Temple will have another road game before its home opener. The Owls will travel to Lafayette for a 1:00 p.m. contest on Saturday, Feb. 27.
