#19 Men's Varsity 8 Wins Knecht Cup

The 19th-ranked Temple Varsity 8 defeated Bucknell by 2.62 seconds to win the Knecht Cup Sunday on the Cooper River. The Owls' 2nd Varsity 8 earned silver medals while TU's Varsity 4 was edged out of a bronze medal by a mere .37 seconds by Boston College.

"The guys showed great composure holding off Virginia and Marist in the home stretch," Temple coach Gavin White said on the Varsity 8's gold-medal performance. "They took the lead 150 meters in and and never trailed. It was a very relaxed effort."

The Owls boat, comprised of Pat Curran (stroke), Nenad Ninkovic (7-seat), Jeff Wunderlich (6-seat), Brendan Cunningham (5-seat), Mike Mirabella (4-seat), Aaron Heyde (3-seat), Tom Masterson (2-seat), John Masterson (bow) and Don Norris (cox), completed the race in a time of 5:53.05. Bucknell held off Virginia at the end for second place while Marist, Mercyhurst and Drexel rounded out the field, respectively.

Temple's 2nd Varsity 8, comprised of Steve Brady (stroke), Scott Waters (7-seat), Jason Cartwright (6-seat), Joe Bellesheim (5-seat), Brian Rehill (4-seat), Peter Ivacic (3-seat), Maciej Grudzien (2-seat), Chris McCann (bow) and Sam Scimeca (cox), edged Virginia by .87 seconds for second place with Drexel earning gold by 3.31 seconds.

The Owls' Varsity 4, comprised of Jimmy Barr (stroke), Mike Vanassche (3-seat), Djordje Vilmanovic (2-seat), Kevin Nally (bow) and Nick Palestro (cox) was beat out for a medal by a mere .37 seconds by Boston Collegeto finish fourth on the day. Philadelphia U. won gold with Colgate picking up the silver medal.

Temple also raced two boats in the 2nd Varsity 4 final with the Owls A boat winning a bronze medal and the Temple B boat finishing fourth. UMass won the race with Boston College coming in second. Saint Joseph's and Villanova finished fifth and sixth, respectively.

Temple next competes at the prestigious Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) Regatta in Oak Ridge, TN on April 17.
