WEST POINT, N.Y. – The no.12 Temple men's gymnastics team placed fifth with a team total of 332.300 in the first qualifying session of the 2010 National Collegiate Championships, Thursday afternoon hosted by the United States Military Academy.
The top three teams from this session advanced to the finals, those being Stanford (357.850), Illinois (354.050) and Ohio State (346.800). Nearly missing the cut was Penn State (345.550) and the Owls, who beat out conference rival Illinois-Chicago (331.250)
Senior Jesse Kitzen-Abelson earned the highest finish of the evening for the Owls, placing ninth on pommel horse with a score of 13.950. Classmate Tyler Croteau placed 23rd in the eventh, scoring 12.750.
Croteau was Temple's top finisher on floor, throwing down a routine worthy of a 14.550. Freshman Allan Malone and senior Scott Bloomfield tied for 20th with scores of 14.300.
On high bar, Bloomfield led the Cherry and White scoring 13.750 to place 18th. Malone also competed on high bar, tying for 21st with a score of 13.450.
The Owls were led by sophomore Taylor Brana on parallel bars, placing 17th with a score of 14.000. Croteau was TU's next best finisher, tying for 25th with a score of 13.600.
As he has all season, junior Blake Collins led the Owls on rings, tying for 17th with a score of 14.150. Sophomore Chris Mooney also fared well on the apparatus, ending in 20th with a score of 13.950.
On vault, Bloomfield tied for 13th with a score of 15.700. Mooney followed tied for 15th, scoring 15.650.
