Men's Crew Earns Three Gold Medals At Bergen Cup

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple men's crew team took home three gold medals at Bergen Cup Saturday afternoon on the Schuylkill River. The Owls' 19th-ranked Varsity 8 won for the second straight year as did TU's Freshman/Novice 4. Temple's Second Varsity 8 also took home the gold in a dominant day on the river by the Cherry and White.
The Owls Varsity 8, comprised of Pat Curran (stroke), Nenad Ninkovic (7-seat), Jason Cartwright (6-seat), Scott Waters (5-seat), Brian Rehill (4-seat), Brendan Cunningham (3-seat), Tom Masterson (2-seat), John Masterson (bow) and Don Norris (cox), came from behind in the final 1250 meters to win by two lengths over Drexel and four lengths over Saint Joseph's.
Temple's Second Varsity 8, comprised of James Barr (stroke), Joe Bellesheim (7-seat), Jeff Wunderlich (6-seat), Aaron Heyde (5-seat), Djordje Vilmanovic (4-seat), Peter Ivacic (3-seat), John Boehm (2-seat), Mike VanAssche (bow) and Matt Sbei (cox), led the entire way, pulling away from Drexel and SJU over the final 500 meters.
Temple Freshman/Novice 4, which won by four lengths, was comprised of Mike Mirabella (stroke) Kevin Nally (3-seat), Maciej Grudzian (2-seat), Richard Ehmer (bow) and Nick Palestro (cox).
The Owls' Varsity 4 A boat placed fourth while TU's B boat was fifth.
The Owls are off next week before competing at the Dad Vail Regatta on May 7-8.
