McLaughlin, along with Mooney and Collins, named to Academic All-Area At-Large team

PHILADELPHIATemple University senior gymnast Patrick McLaughlin has been named the 2009-10 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Men's At-Large Performer of the Year. He, along with junior Blake Collins and sophomore Chris Mooney, is one of 10 student-athletes selected to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team, which is voted by the sports information offices of the 28 area institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

McLaughlin (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) was Temple's top all-around gymnast prior to a season-ending injury in the team's Senior Night meet against Springfield on February 13. He helped the Owls achieve a #10 national ranking and a first place conference finish. McLaughlin, who posted a season-high 87.00 score in a win over Illinois Chicago (1/31), is a two-time Eastern Intercollegiate Gymnastics League and a one-time USA Gymnastics Performer of the Week. At the West Point Open, he won the all-around competition with a score of 85.95 to become the sixth Temple gymnast to the win all-around in the event's 19-year history. He was victorious on the parallel bars and the high bar to lead the team to first place finish at the Navy Open.

McLaughlin, a kinesiology major with a 3.48 cumulative grade point average, was a 2009 College Gymnastics Association first team scholar athlete.

Collins (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) stepped up in a big way when McLaughlin went down with an injury, filling in as the Owls' main all-around competitor. Posting a season average of 83.10 all-around, Collins was most consistent on rings for Temple. His first place score of 14.650 on rings led the Owls to a win at the Navy Open. He also placed first on rings in the Owls' win over conference rival Springfield. His second place all-around score of 82.75 led Temple to a win over William & Mary and earned him EIGL Performer of the Week. A public relations major, Collins boasts an impressive 3.77 cumulative grade point average.

Another strong all-around competitor, Mooney (Freeland, Md./Hereford) opened the season with a second place finish all-around at the West Point Open. He posted a team-best score on rings to help the Owls to a conference win over rival Illinois-Chicago, also leading the team to a win over Army by placing second all-around. Mooney owns a solid 3.73 cumulative grade point average as a kinesiology major.

This year's team is entirely made up of first year recipients. University of the Sciences riflist Glen Hirsh and Penn fencer Andrew Bielen are the other two seniors on the squad. Penn wrestler Gabriel Burak and TU's Collins make up the junior class. The five sophomores on the At-Large All-Area Team are: Penn fencer Vidur Kapur, Haverford squash player Zef Konst, TU's Mooney, Drexel wrestler Alex Ripaldi and Neumann ice hockey forward Mat Valois.
