Men's Gymnastics Places Second In National Academic Team Rankings With Nine First Team All-American Scholar-Athletes

Owls team grade point average a just .008 away from national title

PHILADELPHIA - After another solid year of competition, the Temple men's gymnastics team has even more to be proud of. Nine men's gymnasts earned first team All-America Scholar-Athlete recognition while five others made second team according to the College Gymnastics Association, all helping the Cherry and white boast a combined 3.384 team grade point average which ranked second among NCAA Division I men's gymnastics teams.

The Owls, under the direction of head coach Fred Turoff, were a mere .008 away from the first place team, Michigan, which owns a team grade point average of 3.388.  This was the closest academic finish ever recorded.  Penn State (3.309), Stanford (3.261), and Springfield (3.225) rounded out the top five with ECAC rivals William & Mary (3.198) and Illinois-Chicago (3.099) ranking sixth and seventh respectively.

A grade point average of 3.50 or higher was required of all first team honorees, while second team members needed a 3.20 to 3.499.

Freshman Brett Statman, freshman Alex Tighe and sophomore Chris Mooney ranked in the top percentile of first team members, owning grade point averages in the range of 3.90 to 3.99. Also earning first team recognition were senior Tyler Croteau, sophomore Taylor Brana, freshman Assaf Zoor, sophomore Matt Martin and senior Jesse Kitzen-Abelson. Second team honors went to sophomore Evan Burke, senior Scott Bloomfield, senior Christopher Bizub, junior Evan Shepard and junior Logan Fiery.
