Bransdorfer nets first goal of the year for Owls

Box Score

AMBLER, Pa.
- Junior Evan Bransdorfer netted to tie the game in the first for the Owls, but two unanswered second half goals from Drexel (3-0-0) left the Temple men's soccer team (0-2-1) with a 3-1 loss in an intense Philadelphia Soccer Six match at Ambler Sports Complex. The Owls had several solid scoring chances to change its luck in their Saturday afternoon home opener, but defensive lapses in the second half proved costly.

Temple keeper redshirt-senior Bret Mollon made five saves on the day, including a close range chance in the seventh minute which he dove to deflect away with his left hand.

The Dragons opened the scoring in the 18th minute, as Nate Baker beat the Owls defense and threaded a pass across to Malcom LeBourne for the tally.

The Temple attack gained momemtum minutes later, as freshman Vaughn Spurrier ripped a shot from the top of the box that drilled the crossbar in the 27th minute. Classmate Sawyer Hemmer tried his hand at tying the game, blasting a close range shot in the 29th minute that took a diving stop from Drexel keeper Tim Washam to keep out.

A controversial offsides call kept the Owls off the board in the 30th minute. Senior Max Kinderwater ripped a shot that was too hot for Washam to handle, with junior Tyler Witmer being flagged offsides after tapping home the rebound.

The Owls efforts paid off in the 33rd minute, as recently inserted junior Evan Bransdorfer headed home a rebound to tie the game at 1-1. Sophomore Andrew Dodds set up the score, heading a ball off the crossbar which Bransdorfer collected.

Outshooting their foe 12-6 in the first, the Owls looked to have the upperhand heading out of the break.

Drexel capitalized on several Temple defensive lapses in the second. Andrew Goldberg broke past the TU defense, sending a shot off Mollon which he gathered and tapped in to put the Dragons up 2-1. In the 82nd minte they struck again, with Baker this time finding Nathan Page for a score to push the lead to 3-1.

Temple struggled to generate quality chances in the second half, still outshooting the visitors 12-10 and 24-16 on the game.

Up next, the Owls take on Hofstra on September 19 at 7:30 p.m.
