Box Score (PDF)
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Temple volleyball team rallied to win a set after being down 2-0, but couldn't pull out another win as the Owls lost 3-1 to Appalachian State in their first match of the Tar Heel Classic. The Mountaineers won by scores of 25-19, 25-23, 22-25 and 25-22 to improve their overall record to 9-2, while Temple drops to 2-8.
Junior Collin Wallace led Temple with a double-double of 10 kills and 12 digs, while senior Ariel Pierre recorded a match-high 24 digs for the Owls.
Both teams struggled with their ratio of kills to errors, but Appalachian State's slight edge in kills, digs and blocks proved to be the difference.
After the first set was tied through 12, the Mountaineers pulled away with a 6-1 run and kept that margin through to the end.
The teams were neck-and-neck throughout most the second set until Temple built a four-point lead at 23-19. That's when things stopped going the Owls' way, and TU committed three errors during a 6-0 Appalachian State run that gave the Mountaineers the set and a 2-0 lead in the match.
No lead got away from Temple in the third set, as the Owls pulled away after an 18-18 tie and benefited from errors committed by ASU. But the offense did not hold up, and TU trailed for much of the fourth set. Down 24-18, Temple rallied to fight off four match points before an error finally ended the match in favor of Appalachian State.
Temple will face Ball State in its second match of the tournament at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, and will face host North Carolina at 7:30 p.m.
