Owls get first win with sweep of La Salle; fall to Villanova in final match

PHILADELPHIA – In their second match of the Big 5 Tournament, the Temple Owls earned their first win of the season with a 3-0 sweep of La Salle (2-4) by scores of 25-20, 27-25 and 25-22. Temple (1-4) then lost in its second and final match of the tournament, falling in three to Villanova (3-3) by scores of 25-15, 25-13 and 25-9.
Leading the way for Temple against La Salle was Jessica Antosz with nine kills, zero errors and a hitting percentage of .600. For her performance throughout the Big 5 Tournament, Antosz was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Ashley Carr recorded eight kills vs. La Salle, and Ariel Pierre was the defensive leader with 12 digs.
Temple's strongest set was its first as the Owls out-hit La Salle .368 to .216. The second set was neck-and-neck the whole way with 11 ties. La Salle saved two set points before Carr served up an ace to finally give Temple the 27-25 win.
The Owls led 16-11 in the third set before the Explorers came back to tie the score at 16-16. Four more ties followed, the last at 21-21 before Temple closed out on a 4-1 run, ending the match on a service ace by Rikia Trischuk.
Hitting errors and service errors plagued the Owls throughout their loss to Villanova in the second match of the day. The Wildcats recorded nearly double the Owls' kills, and Temple led only once in the match.
Morgan Petkovich knocked down 10 kills for Villanova to lead all players in the match, and as a team the Wildcats hit a strong .287. Blocking was also a strength for Villanova, who recorded eight blocks to Temple's three.
Pierre tallied 14 digs to lead the Owls, and Rikia Trischuk recorded a team-high 16 assists.
Temple will be back in action next weekend as the Owls travel to Montana for the Montana Invitational. Temple's first match is against North Dakota at 6:30 p.m. (EST) on Friday, Sept. 10.
