Owls compete in first of three home meets this season
PHILADELPHIA - Fans have their first opportunity of the year to catch the Temple men's gymnastics team in action, as the Owls host #5 Penn State and Army in McGonigle Hall on Sunday, January 30. Competition between the three teams begins at 1:00 p.m., with admission free to all who attend.
The Owls are off to an 8-1 start in the early goings of 2011, only being outplaced by the Nittany Lions at the season-opening West Point Open. Since then, Temple took first place at the Navy Open, beating out host-Navy, Springfield and William & Mary.
Senior performance has been key for 35th-year head coach Fred Turoff's Owls. At the Navy Open, Patrick McLaughlin led Temple with first place finishes on high bars and parallel bars. McLaughlin, who is making a return from a season ending injury last year, currently leads the conference with a 14.100 average on parallel bars.
Adam Al-Rokh, another senior athlete bouncing back from injury, has been most consistent on rings for Turoff, owning the EIGL's top average of 14.200. He also ranks first on the team and second in the conference with an all-around average of 81.200.
The #5 Nittany Lions are coming off of a win over #6 Michigan. Penn State, which has just one senior on its roster, has been led by sophomore Parker Raque, who owns the 14th best all-around average in the nation (83.100). Army enters Sunday's competition as the fifth-ranked team in the EIGL, led by sophomore Kip Webber and junior Jonathan Hoey.
Competition will begin inside McGonigle Hall at 1:00 p.m. on January 30.
