Fencing Posts Two Upsets At Penn State Multi-Meet

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The Temple fencing team posted upset wins over #2 Penn State and #8 Penn to go 4-1 at the Penn State Multi-Meet.  The Owls, ranked ninth nationally, were led by eight-win days from sophomore Mikayla Varadi, senior Grace Wu and freshman Epiphany Georges, and nine wins from junior Kamali Thompson.

The day started with an 18-9 win over the University of North Carolina that featured identical 6-3 scores from each squad. The Owls followed that with their one loss of the day, an 11-16 setback at the hands of Duke. Regrouping, the team recorded a 17-10 upset over cross-town rivals, #8 Penn.

Following a break for lunch, Temple returned to action with a 26-1 victory over Drew, featuring shutout performances by the foil and sabre squads. The day was completed in style with a 14-13 upset of defending NCAA Champions and hosts, #2 Penn State.

The foil squad led the way on the day, winning all five meets. In sabre the Owls were nearly as perfect, going 4-1, falling only to Duke. The epee squad finished the day at 2-3.

Individual leaders were Thompson who went 9-1 in sabre, and Varadi and Georges, each 8-2 in foil.

"Any day when you can upset two ranked opponents is a good one," said assistant coach Bradley Baker. "Today's performance really helped show what this team can do. I was especially impressed with how broad-based the results were as every member of our roster showed the ability to win key bouts when it matters. This should bode well for the rest of the season as we continue with more challenging meets next weekend. As a team we're showing good progress towards where we want to be come March and the post-season."

The Owls return to action with eleven meets over two days, including facing four more teams ranked in the top 10 in the country, at Northwestern University on February 5th and 6th.
