Temple Defeats Duquesne, 1-0, On O'Toole's PK

10.28.11 | Women's Soccer

Owls' fourth shutout of the season is the most since 2006

AMBLER, Pa. – For the second time this season, sophomore Karly O'Toole came through for her team when put at the center of a critical situation. In Friday's match at the Ambler Sports Complex against the Duquesne  Dukes, O'Toole netted a penalty kick in the 68th minute after senior Niki Conn drew the call for a hand ball when her shot was illegally blocked by a Duquesne defender. Appointed to take the awarded shot, O'Toole picked up her third goal of the season to help propel Temple past the Dukes, 1-0.

With the win, the Owls improve to 5-12-0 on the year and 2-6-0 in Atlantic 10 Conference play. The shutout winning effort in front of redshirt junior Tara Murphy gave the goalkeeper her fourth clean sheet in net of the season, which is the most by a Temple netminder since 2006.

The majority of the game was evenly matched in terms of scoring opportunities and physicality. Both teams had fairly even totals in the shots category, while combining for 20 fouls in the contest.

Temple fired five shots to Duquesne's four in the opening half. Conn nearly had the Owls on the board in the 27th minute when her shot nailed the post and rolled along the outskirts of the net before Duquesne keeper Ashley Szalwinski got on top of the ball before it trickled in.

In the opening six minutes of the second half, junior Morgyn Siegfreid blasted a ball from roughly 25 yards out right on net, but Szalwinski turned away another strong scoring chance by Temple to keep the game at a scoreless deadlock through 51 minutes.

As mentioned, Temple's win on Friday earned the team its second win in A-10 play this season. With their latest conference victory, the Owls double their total number of victories in conference play from a year ago.

Up next, the Owls will close out their 2011 campaign when they attempt to play spoiler on the St. Bonaventure Bonnies, who could still have postseason implications on the line when they visit Temple at the Ambler Sports Complex for a 1:00 p.m. kick on Sunday afternoon.

Prior to Sunday's contest between the Owls and Bonnies, the Temple University Athletic Department will honor Temple's five seniors with a special ceremony at 12:45 p.m.
