NEWPORT NEWS, Va. –
Temple's Taylor Hairston
and Yana Mavrina
have been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Rookies of the Week, respectively, the league office announced on Monday. Additionally, Aram Abgaryan of Duquesne and Rhode Island's Pam Emery were selected as the Conference's Men's and Women's Performers of the Week.
Hairston won both his matches in Temple's only action last week. He toughed out a two-set win at singles, going to a tiebreaker in the second set, and then teamed up with junior captain Filip Rams
to clinch the doubles point for TU with a 9-7 win at first doubles. Hairston has paired up with Rams in all doubles matches, going 6-1, while putting together a 10-4 singles record, including a 6-2 mark this spring.
The men's team is 6-3 this spring and is back in action on March 7, when it hosts Hofstra in a 12:30 p.m. match at Arthur Ashe Tennis Center.
Mavrina was Temple's only player to go 4-0 for the weekend with a 2-0 singles record and 2-0 doubles mark. The Yaroslavl, Russia native was critical in the Owls' contest against Buffalo, as the match came down to her number three singles match. Mavrina dropped the first set, but battled back to capture the next two and secure the 4-3 win for Temple. She also partnered with classmate Alicia Doms
in doubles play and claimed a pair of wins over Buffalo and Binghamton. The duo is currently riding a seven-match win streak and is 9-2 on the season.
The women's squad boasts a 4-3 record and next hosts Columbia on February 26 at Arthur Ashe Tennis Center at 5 p.m.
