PHILADELPHIA - The Temple men's gymnastics team sent off its three seniors - Patrick McLaughlin, Scott Bloomfield and Jesse Kitzen-Abelson - with a win over Navy at McGonigle Hall on Saturday afternoon. The Owls put together a team score of 340.200 to best Navy's total of 329.600.
Temple put together a sound team effort, which included multiple players posting event-high scores. Head coach Fred Turoff described the team's performance as solid, adding that his Owls still needed to improve in a few areas to be fully prepared for the ECAC Championships in two weeks.
Senior Adam Al-Rokh posted an event-high score of 14.700 on the pommel horse. Fellow senior Blake Collins beat his competition as well, scoring a 14.300 and ranking first on the rings.
McLaughlin claimed the rest of the success, posting first-place finishes in the bottom three events - the parallel bars (14.800), the high bar (14.500) and the vault (15.700).
Junior Chris Mooney also played a significant role in the victory, performing consistently in all six events while posting a second-place finish in the all-around average (83.900).
The Midshipmen came into the event ranked sixth in the EIGL conference with a three score average of 327.008. Navy was led by the likes of Junior Andrew Faulk, who put up a season high all-around average of 85.900.
The Temple men's gymnastics team also celebrated the careers of seniors McLaughlin, Bloomfield and Kitzen-Abelson. McLaughlin, who recovered from a devastating injury one year ago, has provided strong leadership and has consistently produced all year for the Owls. Bloomfield and Kitzen-Abelson have battled through injuries this season as well; however Kitzen-Abelson has bounced back recently to compete in the last three events of the regular season.
The Owls will look to maintain momentum heading into the ECAC Championships, which will be held the first weekend of April in Chicago.
