Illinois State 12, Temple 4
#17 Louisiana-Lafayette 18, Temple 3
ORLANDO, Fla. -
The Temple softball team came up against two challenging opponents on Saturday, March 5, at the 2011 Citrus Classic, being held at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla. The Owls dropped a 12-4 decision to Illinois State, before falling to #17 Louisiana-Lafayette, 18-3.
In the first game of the day, TU squared off against a team it faced a week ago. Last week the score was 6-1 in Illinois State favor, and this week the Redbirds were again victorious with their 12-4 decision.
The Owls did jump out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second on three hits in the inning. Sophomore Ali Robinson
got the frame started with a double down the right field line, was sacrificed to third, and was driven in by a single down the left field line by freshman Stephanie Pasquale
. Junior Rachel Knable
added to the Temple total with a single down the right field line to bring Knable around.
Illinois State quickly took control of the game, though, scoring seven runs in the top of the second. The Redbirds capitalized on two hits and three Temple errors in the frame to take a lead they would never surrender.
The Cherry and White cut it to a 7-4 game with one run in both the bottom of the third and fourth, but Illinois State finished the game off with a five-run fifth. TU again helped the Redbirds in their efforts, committing three more errors in the frame, while giving up four hits.
Pasquale and junior Christina Sykora
were both 2-for-3 at the plate for the Owls. Pasquale drove in two of TU's runs, while Sykora was responsible for one. Senior Kristen Marris
took the loss, pitching all 5.0 innings and allowing six hits. The righthander allowed just one earned run while striking out five.
In the second game, Temple took on the nationally-ranked Louisiana-Lafayette squad. The Owls gave up 14 hits, and five or more runs in the second, third and fourth innings, on the way to the 18-3 loss.
Seven different TU players collected hits in the game, with Sarah Prezioso
going 1-for-2 with a two-run homerun. Freshman Brooklin White
took the loss for Temple, lasting only 1.2 innings with three hits and five runs.
The Owls fall to 3-6 overall and finish up play at the 2011 Citrus Classic with an 11:30 a.m. game against Maryland on Sunday, March 6.
