- The Owls' bats never really got going in Sunday's contest against St. Bonaventure, as the Temple baseball team was left with an 8-1 loss in the series finale at Skip Wilson Field. Temple falls to 21-24 overall, 3-15 in Atlantic 10 play while the Bonnies improve to 20-20, 10-8 in A-10 action.
Freshman Matt Hockenberry
left after 3.1 innings of work in the start, allowing nine hits and five earned runs to the Bonnies. Redshirt-sophomore Steve Visnic
toss three of his 5.2 innings scoreless to close out the contest for Temple, giving up two runs.
At the dish, senior Adrian Perez
led the Owls with a pair of hits, while redshirt-junior Steve Nikorak
creeped closer to the single-season doubles record with a two-base knock in the sixth. Nikorak also scored Temple's lone run of the day, now leading the team with 49 runs scored on the year.
Cael Johnson gave the Bonnies a quality start, going seven innings and limiting Temple to one run and seven hits. Robert Nalepa tossed the final two frames, allowing no runs and one hit.
St. Bonaventure scored a run or more in the first six innings to build a 8-0 lead, with the Owls breaking up the shutout posting a run in the bottom of the sixth. Nikorak led off the frame with a towering double to left center, moving over on a wild pitch and scoring on a successfully turned double play by the Bonnies.
The Owls threatened in the bottom of the eight, loading the bases with no outs but stranding all three runners after Nalepa worked his way out of the jam.
Temple has a pair of midweek games at Villanova (May 10) and Delaware (May 11) before returning to Skip Wilson Field for a three-game set with Saint Joseph's (May 13-15). The Owls will celebrate Senior Day prior to first pitch on May 15.
