PHILADELPHIA—Temple men's gymnastics has been tabbed 2011 National Academic Team Champions by the College Gymnastics Association. In the 2010-11 academic year, the Owls male gymnasts combined for the nation's highest grade point average, finishing with an outstanding 3.519 GPA to help them move up one notch from last year's second place finish.
Recent graduate Jesse Kitzen-Abelson was one of five gymnasts in the nation to be selected first team Academic All-American Scholar-Athletes for all four years of eligibility by the College Gymnastics Association.
The College Gymnastics Association also honored 69 individual gymnasts as 2011 first team All-American Scholar-Athletes for attaining at least a 3.50 GPA. Ten Temple gymnasts were among the honorees including: Kitzen-Abelson, Adam Al-Rokh, Scott Bloomfield, Brett Statman, Alex Tighe, Taylor Brana, Chris Mooney, Zachery Aguiar, Patrick McLaughlin and Jeff Zack.
Sixty-three other gymnasts were named second team All-American Scholar-Athletes for attaining a GPA between 3.2 and 3.499. Temple had three honorees to the team, including: Evan Burke, Dashiell Sears and John Leonard.
