PHILADELPHIA – Following a relocation, time change and then a date change, Temple and Long Island finally went head-to-head in the first day of the Temple/Penn Tournament Saturday afternoon in the first-ever game on the site of the new Dunning-Cohen Champions' Field at Penn Park. Sophomore Vaughn Spurrier got Temple on the board early on, scoring in the eighth minute, but Long Island answered with four unanswered goals to take the match, 4-1.

Spurrier went down field where he was able to force senior goalkeeper Adam Jansseen out of the goal. Going one-on-one with the Blackbird keeper, Spurrier dribbled by and found a gaping net, before spiking a shot that led to his first goal of the season.

The Blackbirds had a short delay in their response. Four minutes later, senior Rommel Forde ripped a shot from five yards out nailing the post, setting freshman Nick Cavaretta up for a putback rebound to deadlock the match at one.

In the 13th minute, Forde had his hand in another Long Island tally; this time feeding senior Steve Jakubowski a pass that drew sophomore Bobby Rosato out of the net, allowing Jakubowski to pelt a shot past him from 15 yards out to open the flood gates and give Long Island its second goal within 46 seconds.

Temple returned to the second half making a change in goal, granting freshman Dan Scheck the first action of his collegiate career. The Owls came out more aggressive, as it outshot the Blackbirds 8-6 in the final 45 minutes. Scheck backed a stronger second half Temple defense, making three saves in the half.

Long Island rounded out its day with a Temple defensive mishap when a defender knocked in Long Island senior midfielder Josh Maley's shot. Junior Jakeem Johnson chipped in the team's fourth goal in the 75th minute.

Continuing the Temple/Penn Tournament, the Owls will have little time for turnaround as they return to the University of Pennsylvania Sunday evening at 8:00 p.m. to host Stony Brook at Dunning-Cohen Champions' Field.
