Women's Soccer Loses to Siena, 3-1

9.25.11 | Women's Soccer

Box Score

AMBLER, Pa. –
Trailing by a goal to the Siena Saints through the first 45 minutes, Temple women's soccer returned with relentless pressure, controlling possession for a majority of the first eight minutes of the second half, producing junior Kate Yurkovic's game-tying goal in the 53rd minute. Siena responded with goals by Ashleigh Barone and Lindsay Tegas within the game's final 15 minutes, to defeat Temple 3-1, as the two teams wrapped up non-conference play.

Tegas scored the first of two goals on the day in the 12th minute when she was fed a pass from Caitlin Cahalan.

Temple redshirt junior goalkeeper Tara Murphy limited damage, especially in the first half. The Saints ripped 10 shots in the opening half, but Murphy was there to make saves on four of the five shots that were sent in on goal. For the game, Murphy finished with six saves.

Yurkovic had a game-high six shots, one of which turned out to be the equalizer for the Owls.

After Siena regained the lead on Barone's goal in the 75th minute, Temple made Siena work to hold its lead. The Owls pressured Siena territory, where they were eventually granted two corner kicks. Junior Casey Greco nearly deadlocked the game on the second of the two corners she played. Temple continued to make the possession dramatic when sophomore Karly O'Toole also missed a game-tying goal as she nailed the cross bar on a free kick in the 83rd minute.

From there, Siena took the ball down field where it put a cap on the scoring, as Tegas scored for the second time, giving the Saints all the insurance it would need with less than five minutes to play.

With non-conference competition now in the rearview, Temple (3-6-0) now sets its sights toward the open of Atlantic 10 Conference play when the Owls head just a few miles north on Broad Street to take on the La Salle Explorers (8-0-1) Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. at McCarthy Stadium.
