Jamel Harris Signs with Harrisburg Stampede

HARRISBURG, Pa. – Former Temple wide receiver Jamel Harris (2003-06) has signed with the Harrisburg Stampede of the American Indoor Football Association for the 2012 season, General Manager and head coach Bernie Nowotarski announced.
A four-year letterwinner with the Owls, Harris was a three-year starter at wide receiver. As a junior in 2005, he started all 11 games, finishing with 20 receptions for 241 yards. Harris received his degree in criminal justice.
“Jamel has outstanding speed and hands,” Nowotarski said. “He is also a capable two-way player being able to play defensive back, if necessary. He also brings with him AIFA Indoor experience from his time playing with the Yakima Warriors in the great state of Washington. At 6' and 200 lbs., he also has the size and strength to be an active play maker in our offense scheme.”
Prior to attending Temple, Harris played for coach Harry Chabookjian at Red Bank (N.J.) Regional High School. As a senior, he was named a first-team All-American, All-State, and All-County honoree. Harris was named to the same three honors as a member of Red Bank's track team.
The Shewsbury, N.J., native was ranked by SuperPrep as the best WR and 12th-best player in New Jersey in 2000. Named the 2001 Nike Camp MVP, he was undefeated in the 100 and 55-meter hurdles as a junior. Heading into his senior football season, Harris suffered a knee injury in track, tearing his ACL, in what could have been a career-ending injury. He missed his senior season of HS football.
Harris played arena football in 2010 for the Yakima Valley Warriors. He had 42 receptions for 509 yards and seven touchdowns in seven games. Also seeing action at defensive back, Harris had two interceptions and a touchdown in four games.
Harris currently resides in Philadelphia.
