Women's Fencing Ranked 8th in Season's First Coaches' Poll

PHILADELPHIA – CollegeFencing360.com released its first coaches' poll of the 2012 women's fencing season on Thursday. In the season's first of three polls, the Temple Owls are ranked No. 8 in the nation. [Full rankings listed below]

"As coaches, we're happy to see the recognition that the program is receiving," assistant coach Brad Baker said. "We feel honored to be one of nation's top-ranked teams."

Last weekend, the Owls competed in the USFA North American Cup out in Portland, Oregon, where five members had Top 32 finishes in their respective bouts before sophomore Chantal Montrose took 11th place in junior epee.

Earlier this season, the Owls also demonstrated what a talented fencing squad they are when they were led by Epiphany Georges' silver medal effort at Penn State's Garret Open

"As usual, we fence a demanding schedule every season, including meets this year against all nine of the other currently-ranked programs," Baker said. "This gives us the opportunity to really see what our team is made out of and work our way up in the standings over the next couple of months."

On Saturday when Temple heads to the University of Pennsylvania for the Philadelphia Invitational in Hutchinson Gym beginning at 9:00 a.m., the Owls will get a chance to fence against No. 4 Northwestern in Round 5 beginning at 3:15 p.m. Temple will also go up against Cornell, Sacred Heart and North Carolina over the course of the day, all of which are receiving votes in the coaches' poll.
