BINGHAMTON, N.Y. –
Temple men's tennis opened its spring campaign with a 4-3 win at Binghamton late Sunday evening, January 29, at the Binghamton Tennis Center. The Owls fell behind early, losing the doubles point, but rebounded to win four of six singles to take the match.
The win marked Temple's first in three attempts against perennial power Binghamton. The Bearcats have won four-straight America East titles and have advanced to the NCAA Championship in seven of the last nine years.
In doubles play, the Bearcats won at numbers one and two to claim the point. Senior Dmitry Vizhunov
teamed up with newcomer Kristian Marquart
at the third flight to defeat Binghamton's Ruben Haggai and Robin Lesage, 8-6, and salvage the doubles sweep.
Senior captain Filip Rams
got the Cherry and White on the board with a straight-set singles win at the first flight, defeating Alexandre Haggai, 6-3, 6-4. Lesage made it a 3-1 host team lead with his 6-4, 6-1 win over Vizhunov at the third flight, but the Owls won the next three bouts to claim the tight win.
At number five, senior Mansur Gishkaev
defeated Bastian Bornkessel, 6-2, 6-4, before junior Kacper Rams
handed Ruben Devos a 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 loss at the second flight. Marquart secured the win for TU with a thrilling 6-7(5), 7-6(5), 6-1 victory at number four. Sophomore Taylor Hairston
just missed making it a 5-2 Temple win, dropping a three-set match at number six to Rafael Rodrigues, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6(6).
“This was a really great way to start off the season,” said head coach Steve Mauro
. “The guys really played with a lot of heart and put together a true team effort. I want to extend a special congratulation to Kristian Marquart
, who notched his first NCAA win. This was a good win over a very tough team.”
Temple is 1-0 and will open the home portion of its schedule on Sunday, February 5, with an 8:30 a.m. match against Atlantic 10 rival George Washington at Arthur Ashe Tennis Center.
