URI Downs Women's Soccer, 2-1, In Overtime
10.12.12 | Women's Soccer
AMBLER – Temple Women's Soccer suffered a 2-1 overtime heartbreaker to the Rhode Island Rams Friday at the Ambler Sports Complex. Trailing by a goal just over five minutes into the match, courtesy of URI's Ellie Bales, freshman Erin Lafferty evened the score with the first goal of her career seconds before the teams went into halftime. The Owls and Rams fought through an intense second half and exchanged chances, but it was Bales again who found a way to beat redshirt senior goalkeeper Tara Murphy when she fired home the game-winner after taking a feed from Lucy Gilden less than two minutes into overtime.
Bales' two-goal game opened in the fifth minute of the contest when she was led into the box on Ellen Shroeder's feed.
Lafferty became the third freshman to have a goal for the Owls this season with her score in the 44th minute. Her goal gave the Owls a big momentum boost heading into halftime and made it the first time in the last 13 games that both the Owls and their opponent scored in the game.
Having six shots in each half, Temple had their strongest chances in the second half.
On a corner kick delivered by junior Karly O'Toole in the 55th minute, she positioned the ball inside the box, which created a scramble. After few taps at it by the Owls, the ball appeared as if it had gone in, but was kept out by URI keeper Chelsea Broghamer. With the play dead at the point, tensions inside the net flared, causing the referees to issue yellow cards to a member of each side.
Later on in the match and with the physicality at a high level, senior Kate Yurkovic was fouled on her shot inside the box by a URI defender in the 84th minute, warranting a penalty kick.
With regulation time starting to come to a close and with the Owls getting a critical opportunity to break the one-all deadlock, O'Toole was appointed to take the PK. Having three PK goals, which have served as game-winners since transferring to Temple, her attempt on Friday was on point but slammed the right side of the cross bar, keeping the match tied.
Getting a corner kick attempt, URI could not come up with anything, sending the Owls the other way with open field. As the team flew past the midfield and into the Rams side of the field, the Owls were stunned when they were called for being offside.
Looking to make one last rush before the final horn in regulation, the Rams went right back down the field. Temple interrupted their movement by being called for two fouls before Yurkovic was issued a card in the 89th minute.
In overtime, the Owls took possession off the kickoff. Unable to find a shot, the Rams worked their way down the other end. Gilden received the ball off a throw in. Finding a way to get the ball throw the traffic of Temple defenders around her, Bailes was wide open and had yards in front of her to set up for a shot for the game-clincher.
Friday's 2-1 score marks the 10th straight game that has been decided by one goal or less for the Owls.
Temple drops to 4-9-2 on the year and 1-3-0 in Atlantic 10 Conference play. The Owls will close out the weekend when they host the Massachusetts Minutewomen on Sunday for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
